Pre-Library,
Birth to 9ish

Entering the Library. 1st Experience.
Aged 9ish

I have always had a strong connection to libraries, and with their closures due to Covid, thought it would be interesting to investigate a space that means a lot to me, but that I can't physically access.
Gradually the project became about my and other relationships to libraries, explored through different parts, as sectioned below.

The Library of my childhood was never a silent one; I wanted to include some more interactive elements to cross the bridge of digital and physical library spaces, to add more dimensions and translate the childhood environment through this collection of work.

Looking at categorisation, this body of work has been ordered chronologically in its production, and sub sectioned running alongside each other to highlight how one idea fed another, and the tricky process of untangling these.
The sections are the key feeding proponents to this archive's production; how I work.

MEMORIES

My own and other's memories of libraries.
Idea of nostalgia and finding joy and comfort in these memories.
Memories influence how people experience and view libraries.

Library Building

Physical investigations of the local building. Ideas of reportage, mood,
texture and emotional reactions to the building.

THE JOURNEY

The Library is also to my mind tied up with the experience of getting to it, and the environment around it. The freedom and anticipation of the walk was always one of my favourite parts, and I was known for wandering off at all hours.

The library, and the area I grew up wandering, is intrinsically linked.

Routes, walking, exploring, to and fro.

Research influenced

Work particuarly influenced by something I've read or found out, such as arson attacks on San Fransico Library, book lootings and burnings, and the essay by Borges, his library of Babel.
(The idea of an infinate library where words get so amny and so jumbled, they ceace to have any meanng or structure at all)
